What is Meta Description?

A meta description is a short HTML attribute that summarizes a web page's content, typically displayed under the page title in search engine results. It's set in the page's head as <meta name="description" content="...">. While Google has confirmed the meta description is not a direct ranking factor, it heavily influences click-through rate — and click-through rate, in turn, influences rankings indirectly over time.

Why it matters

A meta description is your free ad copy on the search results page. Most teams either skip it entirely (Google generates a random snippet from the page) or fill it with keyword soup. Both lose clicks. The teams that win write the meta description like a sharp newspaper headline: what the page covers, why it matters, and a reason to click. It is sixty seconds of work per page. The difference between a generic auto-generated snippet and a sharp custom one can double click-through rate on the same ranking position.

How it works

You write a meta description in your CMS — most platforms have a dedicated field per page. Aim for 145 to 158 characters. Include the primary keyword (Google sometimes bolds it in results), describe what the page delivers, and end with a hook. Google may still rewrite your meta description if it thinks a different snippet matches the query better, but writing a good one drastically improves the odds yours appears. Avoid duplicating the same description across pages — each page needs its own. For glossary entries, comparison posts, and landing pages, a custom meta description is the single highest-ROI SEO task per page.
